University of NSW visit to St Raphaels’s
Don’t just learn science. Do science. Connecting world-leading researchers from UNSW to regional schools.
On Thursday 23rd October UNSW CURIOUS (Connecting University Research and Innovative Outreach for high school students) will be delivering workshops to Years 7-10. They will be creating opportunities for young people to explore, experiment and connect with STEM in exciting new ways.
Students will be participating in the following workshops onsite at school.
Year 7 - Eight Legs, Endless Adaptations: Exploring the World of Spiders
Year 8 – Chemistry - Chromotography, dry ice cylinders and exploring smell & molecular shape & handedness relationship
Year 9 – Survival of the fittest - Participants investigate organism relationships and evolution in a rapid-fire tabletop simulation. Students will attempt to create and evolve the ‘perfect’ species as they survive disease and ecosystem changes. This workshop covers the theory of evolution and natural selection to reflect on the recipe for the survival and success of a species
Year 10 - DNA in Your Hands - Explore DNA and genetics. Participants extract DNA from strawberries using household items, then discuss genetics and heritability in humans, by exploring unexpected traits that vary between different people.
